Gorgeous bougainevillea at San Juan Capistrano Mission. It is not always blooming but when it is you have to paint it. A woman in a red dress was wandering around the garden had to quickly put her in because she matched the bougainvillea! (There are 2 spellings of bougainevillea in this entry because I am too lazy to look it up………………….there is no spell check in blogvillea)

Quick sketch of boats at Newport Beach’s Balboa Island. It was the end of the day and the sun was hitting the water with these yellow/white bright reflective light spots. Everything else looked so gray compared to the “sun spots”.

This was painted on a misty morning. After a couple of hours the sun started to show through the clouds making the water and greens more vibrant.

Straw Hat was painted on a clear San Clemente day. The hat and the sunlight is what this painting is about! Just an old painting hat, but it had it’s own personality like the model who wore it.

I painted this scene along San Clemente beach trail. This spot is inland from “Seal Rock”. While standing there you could hear the seals barking from their island/rock in the water. They sound so close! But not as close as the roaring trains coming by about 15 feet down a little hill. My calves were sore for a few days after this painting session. I could not figure out why, then I recalled that I stood, leaning, for 2-3 hours on a sand hill off the trail so I was not blocking the runners and bikers. Hey, it is not plein air painting unless all your senses are involved!

Quick plein air painting of Laguna. Gazebo and hotel in the distance. It was misty and cool with great atmosphere when I started. Soft pink marine layer was rolling by.
