Sunglasses 8×10 OIL

Patrice has an instant attitude just putting on the sunglasses. It was fun in this painting to show a hint of the face coming thru the glasses. Although I know the model,  sunglasses make her look more anonymous.  Haven’t you noticed that when you meet someone with sunglasses on you don’t feel like you “know ” them until they take the glasses off. You get a better sense of a person without the them.

Divers Cove Laguna Beach 9×12 Oil

Plein air painting on Cliff Dr. Laguna Beach.  This scene is looking south towards  the main part of town.  It was a misty day and it felt like it was going to rain any minute but I was able to finish this painting before the rain.  Laguna has so many beautiful coves this is just one of them.

Palms at Heisler 8×10 Oil

I painted this yesterday at Heisler Park, Laguna.  It was cold and windy so I painted quickly.  I got the gist of the scene done.  When I was painting I was in a quiet meditative state and this old man with a raspy voice walked by and started talking to me in a loud voice.  I was startled and jumped a bit.  He told me how his mother was a painter in Laguna and he had given all her paintings away to relatives.  As he walked away I realized about once a year this man walks by and tells me this……….I never connected it before…………as I continued to paint I wondered how many other painters he tells this to.  A lot of people stop and talk when you paint outside and it is fun to talk to them.

Nailpolish 5×7 Oil

Nailpolish bottles are a good way to practice cones and triangles like in art school. This is a tiny painting I did on a day I was too tired to plein air paint. Bright colors always inspire me.

San Clemente Oceanview 36×48 Oil

I pass this scene everday after dropping kids off at school.  Most of the time it doesn’t look green and lush but after the rain, when the wildflowers grow, it is beautiful.

Apples and Tea 8×10 Oil

I love collecting tea cups and painting them.  Older tea cups are alot smaller than modern ones.  It’s fun to arrange still lifes into different compositions til it is paintable.  Still lifes are great painting practice……..they don’t move and you can  control the shadows.  Painting landscapes outside you must paint quickly before the shadows move and the wind blows your easel over.
